As Olive Starts Cleaning Shop

Crime-ridden is certainly not an adjective that pops into one's mind when asked to describe the town of Olive, but during the building of the Ashokan Reservoir, the town judge certainly had his hands full. Petty larceny, public intoxication, disorderly conduct and assault with a stone are a few of the crimes recorded in the approximately 4 cubic feet of court dockets that date from 1908 to 1917 and are stored in the town vault.

Tom Alworth Loves These Hills

For a biologist who once spent 7 years doing field research in the northern Catskills, running the region's most influential environmental, community development, and cultural education organization might seem a bit of a stretch. Not so for Tom Alworth, Executive Director of the Arkville-based Catskill Center for Conservation and Development. "Frankly I think a background in science and ecology is as good as any in dealing with the issues impacting the Catskill region" says Alworth. "It would be hard to find an issue in our region that isn't at its core about how we impact our environment, or how it impacts us."

Town Road Crew Sets Its Sights On Road & Bridge Repairs For The Coming Months

With Memorial Day upon us and the lilacs blooming, the blizzards of this past Winter are far from our thoughts as we give ourselves over to the rhythms of Spring. But for the town Highway Department, the heavy snow fall and freezing temperatures are still at play. "We used a lot of sand on the roads this Winter and now we've got to remove it from places where it got built up," said Highway Superintendent Jimmy Fugel last week.
