The Shandaken Theatrical Society is starting a Last Friday Picture Show series of classic and art house movies on January 25 at 7p.m. at its theater at 10 Church Street in Phoenicia. Showing real 16mm prints on the last Friday of every month for a suggested, with popcorn, they will start out with You Can’t Take It With You, one of Frank Capra’s sweetest and funniest movies. If you’ve ever hesitated to bring someone home to meet your weird family, this is the movie for you. The 1938 film features an all-star cast including Jimmy Stewart, Lionel Barrymore and Jean Arthur. Originally an Odd Fellows Hall, built in 1887, the STS building was a movie house from the 40s through some time in the 70s, showing movies every night in summer and on weekends in winter. “I saw Gone with the Wind there when it first came out,” says Richard Knight, a lifelong resident of the area, and one of the founding members of the Theatrical Society. “And I think we only paid 25 cents—though for Gone with the Wind we paid a little more. I was about 15 and worked in a boarding house in Mt. Pleasant and with the other young people from there we used to get a taxi to bring us to Phoenicia for about $1. We’d go to a movie and then go to where Morne Imports is now and have a soda at the soda fountain.” Knight also remembers giggling during a serious Bette Davis movie and being chastised the next day at school by his teacher, who had been in the theater that evening as well.
