A
whole busload of Olivites made their way to the October
3 opening parade for the new Walkway Over The Hudson between
Poughkeepsie and Highland, having a spectacular time showing
off their bright banners and many handmade flags. They did us
all, and Ulster County, proud up there!

Leifeld Releases His Closeheld Budget, Board Maintains Across-the-Board
Raises
10/8//2009
By Olive Press Staff
Lack of revenues
are being blamed for the jump in taxes expected by Olive’s
chief fiscal officer Bert Leifeld, who officially passed on
his preliminary spending plan to the rest of the town board
on Monday at an informal session in the town offices in West
Shokan.
Attendance was sparse, made up of only Board members, candidates
in the coming election, members of the Olive Press and town
Clerk Sylvia Rozelle.
Yet all attempts to see the preliminary figures, which most
municipalities post online and make sure are publicly disseminated
long before such board meetings, were met with a terse moratorium
prior to the 4:00 PM gathering.

Winchells Corners’ Historic Church
Celebrates Its Renovations & History

At first blink, it was a step back in time.
As the speaker’s words rolled across the room, there were
only three things which leaned stubbornly against a convincing
impression that the scene was playing out 150 years ago: First
of all, the drone of traffic whirring by on Route 28, only a few
dozen yards from the open door, betrayed the advanced number of
the year across the top of the calender page.
In those bygone days, it would have been the sound of occasional
horse and wagon outside on Plank Road.

Onteora Union Says Talks Not Working While Board Says They’re
Still New
10/8/2009
By Lisa Childers
The
Onteora teachers and non-teachers contract dispute continues.
Hundreds of picketers, including retired teachers and teachers
from schools throughout the area, joined the ranks and marched
with Onteora teachers in front of the Middle/High School before
Tuesday night’s October 6 school board meeting at the Boiceville
campus. The marchers then silently entered the High School cafeteria
in order to address the school board. The venue was changed from
Bennett Elementary to the High School in order to accommodate
the mass of people. But the board never showed up at the 6pm start
time.

A
Jar Of Olives...
Autumn
10/8/2009
By Carol La Monda
I just returned from the Adirondacks where the leaves
are at full peak. Even here there is a majestic display
of Mother Nature’s ability to paint the landscape
in the bright reds, rusts, oranges and yellows. Next
weekend, Columbus Day weekend, should bring the “leaf
peepers” who, for a weekend at least, will share
our remarkable views. I think Nature gives us the treat
of color before She takes all color away leaving us
with the non-colors of winter: white, black and gray.

Drilling
OKed For Catskills
Questions Arise About DEC’s
Actions Despite Geologist’s
Belief It Will Miss Us
10/8/2009
By Paul Smart
The state Department of Environmental
Conservation has finally released
its first draft of an environmental
impact statement that proposes
new laws for natural gas drilling
in New York’s Marcellus
Shale after 18 months of study
and several delays. State officials
say the guidelines, which are
809 pages long and extremely
detailed, address key concerns
including the disclosure of
fluids used in the drilling
process known as hydraulic fracturing
as well as the on-site handling
of drilling waste.
The
draft materials now face a 60-day
public review period. There
will no public hearings where
the public can make statements
for the record.

Wilderness Bob Expiates Our
Pasts
10/8/2009
By Paul Smart
Wilderness Bob doesn’t
want to use anything but
his trail name for the
story he feels he has
to tell, all about walking
our nation’s three
longest scenic hiking
trails to earn more than
what such walkers call
the Triple Crown.
“You have a lot
of time hiking for five
months to go over just
what you want in a story
like this,” Bob
says sipping coffee at
Olives in Shokan Square
a few days after his return
from out west. “The
reason I’m sitting
here with you is to bring
attention to the trails
that are out there, as
well as the trails we
have right here in the
Catskills that many don’t
even know about.”
