A Letter
From The Town’s New Councilman

Dear Editor,
I would like to thank everyone for turning out and voting on November 6th! I truly appreciate the citizens of Olive for their various words of encouragement and support throughout the months. Words can’t express enough how grateful I am for the opportunity to serve this incredible town. I really appreciate all the signs of encouragement such as the smiles, honks, laughter, and the warm cups of coffee or hot chocolate that I received on the side of the road.

Thank you for all who worked behind and on the front line during the campaign season; our efforts truly came to fruition. I am eagerly looking forward to serving and representing our town.
Thank you again for all your support,
Peter Friedel

No One’s Going Cold...
HEAP Still Ready To Fund Heating Needs As Oil Prices Just Keep On Rising

11/22/2007 By Paul Smart
So it’s getting cold finally. Oil prices are shooting through the roof. Is there going to be help for those who need it? Depends on who you’re talking to and where you are, income-wise. From the midst of a “busy,.busy, busy” office the day of the region’s first signs of snow and ice, they said funding looked good and programs weren’t nearly filled.

County Tackles Social Drinking Legislation As Means Of Battling Teen Tragedies

11/22/2007 By Lisa Childers
“Kids are less likely to drink if parents set boundaries and voice clear no use expectations and hold regular discussions about alcohol,” said Onteora District health coordinator Robin Sears at a November 6 school board meeting where she presented the new Community Social Host Legislation, soon to make its way to the floor of the County Legislature. If passed, the law would make it a violation for anyone over the age of 16 to allow alcoholic beverages to minors in their homes or on their property
“Too many well meaning parents underestimate the consequences of teen drinking and think that by supervising teen parties or events where alcohol is served, they’re communicating their concern and reducing the risk,” Sears added.

A Jar Of Olives...
Thanks Giving

11/22/2007 By Carol La Monda
I like Thanksgiving better than any other holiday. It’s less commercial than Christmas, less labor intensive than Halloween. It’s a time for food and family. Of course, there are those football games and the parade, but mostly it is a time of fellowship. Imagine how many people will be sitting down and eating the same menu: turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole, turnips, cranberry sauce and green bean casserole. Dessert? Pumpkin pie, naturally. I think supermarkets advertise those foods and recipes just to get rid of some of the slow-moving items. How many times a week, or month do you prepare turnips? I picture the “Turnip Growers Lobby” gearing up with excitement as they approach the one time of year of increased sales.
