Town Board Handles Business, Leifeld Quells Rumors Regarding
Resignation
12/4/2008
Olive Press Staff
It was a quiet and informal evening at the Olive Town Meeting
Hall on Bostock Road on Monday, December 1. The town council,
known for being well dressed and professional during regular
monthly meetings, were decidedly off duty when it came to such
chores at this unofficial workshop, where lumberjack shirts
where the attire of choice and the officials were seated not
up in their microphoned positions behind the walnut paneled
podium but at a fold up lunch table on the audience floor.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus
12/4/2008
By Carol LaMonda
“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”
How I wish I, not the editor of the New York Sun, had
written that reply to Virginia O’Hanlon. Yet,
the truth prevails. How do I know there is a Santa Claus?
I have had the privilege of meeting him, or them, personally.
There is something very magical about personifying the
spirit of love and sharing. Whether it’s one of
Santa’s helpers like Henry Rank, Mr. Koethe, Ternice
Winne, Jeanne Bachor, Donna Van Kleeck, Diane Sorbellini
or Linda Burkhardt, or if it’s the real guy, we
all feel that excitement of believing in goodness as
a child does without the cynicism of adult doubt.

Let’s play ‘Pretend.”
We can do that better than
anybody.
Let’s pretend this
is real wealth getting sliced
&diced by banker’s
software; real contributing
wealth like the production
centers our business leaders
have deported along with
the domestic income employment
attached to production,
like the paychecks of Hershey
workers before they moved
their operations to India
and changed the taste of
their chocolates.. Let’s
pretend that we can pay
off this national credit
card before we max it out.
Let’s pretend these
folks in the limelight are
political leaders, running
the affairs of the nation
in the public interest rather
than just talking props
in a stage play written
by a committee of thieves.
Let’s pretend the
actions being taken now
are for the good of everybody...
Better yet, let’s
pretend this isn’t
really happening. Let’s
pretend everything is normal...
Okay, enough pretending..

Onteora Board To Fix HS Water
Problem And Begins Eying Coming
Budget Cuts
12/4/2008
by Lisa Childers
The Onteora District School
Board unanimously approved $118,000
for the purchase of a greensand
water filtration system at its
Boiceville campus, which includes
the Middle/High School and Bennett
elementary.
At Tuesday night’s December
2 meeting at Bennett Elementary,
Greg Bolner of Clark Patterson
Lee presented three different
options: greensand filtration,
ion exchange and oxidation followed
by filtration. The engineering
firm recommended greensand filtration
as the best option since it
is most commonly used for manganese
control. Included in the cost
is the replacement of the building’s
original water holding tank.
