Town Board Moves On To Other Issues After Announcing Its Settlement

Many smiles, much good cheer and resounding applause marked
the April 1 Olive Town Board meeting where some may have thought
that Olive Town Supervisor Berndt Liefeld was playing an April
Fools joke by announcing the momentous reservoir assessment
agreement between the Town of Olive, Onteora Central School
District and NYC, owner of the Ashokan reservoir. The agreement
ended a seemingly endless series of lawsuits brought by NYC
against the Town of Olive that spanned almost a century. The
punch line never came however and the audience was left to ponder
the full meaning of the historic event.

Many Bridges Is That?
Looking Into The Details Of The City’s Complicated New
Span Repair Plans

There are at least 25 bridges in the Town of Olive (not counting
the hamlet of Olivebridge), and the long-awaited repair/replacement
of a number of the New York City-owned bridges around the Ashokan
Reservoir has commenced. The work, which is expected to impair
traffic flow to varying degrees at different locations around
town, is scheduled to continue years into the future.

Isn’t this the longest winter ever? It sure seems
like it is never going to end. Our family was out cutting
wood last weekend because we had run out. When we tried
to decide why, we came to the conclusion that we had plenty
of wood, but that winter was just longer than usual.

Rosenfeld is stepping down
as an Onteora board member,
effective April 4. He sent
a short letter sent for
School board president Mary-Jane
Bernholz to read at this
past week’s April
8 meeting, Rosenfeld stated
that, “I wish the
board well in all of its
future endeavors and value
their friendships.”
Rosenfeld, the sole remaining
board member from Woodstock
and one of two making up
a minority against the board’s
current 5-2 Olive majority,
which has tended to vote
as a block in the last year,
was the board’s senior
trustee, well into his second
term and having served for
over four years.

After years of continuous
legal struggles, and just
one week following the
announcement that a State
Supreme Court Judge had
thrown out a New York
City lawsuit addressing
four years of town assessments,
the Town of Olive passed
a Resolution at its Tuesday,
April 1 meeting authorizing
a settlement recognizing
negotiated valuation for
the City-owned Ashokan
reservoir for the coming
ten years.
