Remember, folks, that they’re not playful with us, too.

His Views About The Past’s
Lessons For Our Future
6/19/2008
By Charlie Blumstein
Recent
events here at home and
around the globe illustrate
the stark contrast between
life as it was in the Catskills
prior to the 1950s and life
in the region today. Our
venerable elders such as
Harvey “Lintz”
Avery, Everett Cook, Chet
Scofield, Tommy Pederson,
Hoppy Quick, Bud Eckert,
Billy Lohrer, Alfred, Al,
Vince, Bob and Tony Barringer,
“Billy O” Osterhoudt,
John Ingram, Sheldon Boice,
Beth Kelder, Bill Davis,
F. George Krueger, Lester
“Sonny” Davis,
Florence Giuliano, Lonnie
and Ruth Gale, Sherret Chase,
Albert and Jane Fox, Ernie
and Don Beesmer - along
with so many others - have
lived and demonstrated a
lifestyle and ethic that
was rich in locally produced
and preserved food, hard
work, high spirit, neighborly
reciprocity, cooperative
effort, and high level practical
skills that were passed
down through the generations
and which had up to that
time fostered a high level
of overall local sufficiency,
productivity, well being
and beneficial inter-dependence.

This was the week to celebrate
Billy Lohrer and Bruce La Monda’s
70th birthday. About three hundred
people joined the birthday boys
for a party that included Thunder
Ridge Band and DJ Star Treks,
a face painting clown, a pig roast
a-la-Pup Wullum and food catered
by Missy Beck. This Bigger Billy
and Bruce Birthday Bash was the
tenth year reunion of the 60th
Big Billy and Bruce Birthday Bash
(B-5) held in 1998. They are already
planning the Biggest one for 2018
to celebrate their eightieth which
will include wheelchair races
