Confessions of a NRFU Enumerator
5/20/2010
By Dave Channon
I am a NRFU. In case you don't speak acronymese,
that's Non Responder Follow Up. The lucky person
who gets to interview at every house, cabin or yurt
that didn't fill in and mail back their Census questionnaire.
Along with a couple dozen neighbors and friends,
I pound every rutted dirt back road and driveway-from-hell
from the near side of Woodstock and Shandaken to
the fringes of Hardenburgh. At least it's better
than my previous Federal stint amid the snow drifts
of Update/Leave... tying a census form in a bag
on anything someone could live in, including teepees
and caves. One guy I know broke the chains of his
4 wheel monster snow plow getting up the 6 foot
deep stuff on his driveway. Then the wrecker got
stuck. When he finally got to his door, a census
bag was on the knob. Federal regulations.

Southpaw
5/20/2010
By Carol LaMonda
It's a right-handed world, and I am a southpaw by default.
The surgeon put in a titanium plate and a bunch of screws
to hold the pieces of my right wrist together. Aside
from some throbs and aches, my arm in a sling feels
like I am carrying around a frozen leg of lamb.

Rebuilding What A Crew
Put Up

By
Paul Smart
Barry Knight and I are
standing high atop a
ridgeline in West Hurley
overlooking the Ashokan
Reservoir, the Catskill
Mountains, the Shawangunks
and, far to the northeast,
the distant rises of
the Taconics. Birds
of prey circle gracefully
high above. The only
sound is of wind and
the amassed rustling
of trees as far as we
can see.
