8/12/2010 By Lisa Childers
Parents with children entering the Onteora school district turned out at an August 3 Board of Education meeting in the High School auditorium concerned about changes that may occur with the incoming kindergarten.
As it stands, the administrative cabinet has made a recommendation that would combine two kindergarten classrooms each in Bennett and Phoenicia elementary into one class per school. Traditionally, the schools have two classrooms but enrollment in both schools has declined with a total of 21 students enrolled in Bennett and 20 students in Phoenicia. The first glimmerings that something big would be happening in Phoenicia this coming weekend, August 13 through 15, took place long before anyone was talking about a Voicefest, as the First Annual Phoenicia Festival of the Voice has become known far and wide.
Kerry Henderson, Louis Otey and Maria Todaro, all local residents, told of how they'd put on a one-shot benefit opera performance in the Parish Field off Main Street last summer while sitting around in their new festival's offices on a recent morning. That event had come about when Henderson was standing in the park, located behind his home, and got into a conversation with the town's Rec Committee head about a community wish for new playground equipment.

A Jar Of Olives...
Too Much Information

My BFF said, "OMG, that's TMI!" For you non-texters and Faceless Bookers, that is "My best friend forever said, "Oh, my God, that is too much information." Too much information is bombarding us from television, our smart phones, i-pods, i-pads, and computers. I am old enough to remember when television was free, and possibly four networks could broadcast their signal into those silly rabbit ears. Waiting for the mailman to bring a real letter was an event anticipated with excitement. I can't remember the last time I received a hand-written letter. All that comes in the mail today are circulars and bills; neither is worth the long walk to the mailbox.
