GLORY DAYS... Sure, the full color of a Catskills autumn
is grand, but so's the brilliant lead-in to the big hurrah
itself. Enjoy the ups and downs of what they call Indian
Summer!

School Lockdown
Gang-Related Shooting By 16 Year Olds Leads
To Arrests & OCS Reaction Kudos

By Phoenicia Timess Staff
It's the sort of thing that chills a parent
to the bone... a campus lockdown at the High
School based on reports that there's been a
shooting. Suspects are at large with guns. No
matter that busses have already left for the
afternoon. There's still an elementary school
nearby. We remember the stand-off in Margaretville,
have seen news footage from all sorts of unbelievable
events around the nation in recent years.

Recent Educational Shifts

It remains mystifying as to how a valedictorian speech
given at Coxsackie-Athens High School in Greene County
in June became an internet sensation referenced by
almost 400 separate websites even before someone posted
a video of it on the web.

Safety Concerns
Town Board Hears Route 28 & Deerfield
Road Complaints, Vows To Take Action
9/23/2010
By By Cindy Johansen
The
Olive Town Board opened their September
14 meeting with a letter submitted
by Richard Feldman, whose concerns
were focused on incidents that he
has personally witnessed on Route
28 in Shokan. Feldman penned a letter
to Senator Bonacic requesting his
help to review the situation regarding
accidents in our town. Senator Bonacic
forwarded a copy of Feldman's letter
to the New York State DOT along with
his request that the state review
Feldman's concerns. Feldman then spoke
to the Board and identified several
methods that have been successful
in reducing speed or increasing awareness
in various other parts of the country
where issues such as ours have been
identified.

The
Rhythm Of Life
On Art & Mothering
9/23/2010
By Euphema Robinson
The rhythm of life is everything.
There are no distinctions here.
Time really waits for no man and
forget about woman-if I don't
watch it time will zoom right
past me. I make time because my
two boys don't sleep late, I sincerely
wished they did. Two months before
I got pregnant, I was one of a
half dozen artists in a group
show at the Time Life Building
in New York City. I enjoyed the
electrifying atmosphere. There
were hipster artists everywhere,
some discreetly checking out each
other's work while sipping red
wine, others possibly having conversations
with potential clients. I mean,
it was an otherworldly feeling
standing in that spacious room
looking at my art on the wall
and how perfect it fit the chosen
spot. I remember being mindful
of containing my excitement, my
friends were there, all happy
for me and I wished I could have
that special feeling every day.
Art makes me happy, but it is
hard work, it takes strong will
and discipline.

Onteora Names McKeon

New Community Meetings
To Mull Options
9/23/2010
By Gary Alexander
At a time that public
education in the United
States is leaning over
the edge of the most massive
change in its 157-year
history, a high school
teacher residing in West
Shokan, who taught at
Onteora on a string of
leave replacements from
2002 to 2004, recently
found herself addressing
vital points of the moment
to U.S. Secretary of Education
Arne Duncan and reflecting
on how she came to be
in the position she was
in.

Super Heroes
9/23/2010
By Carol La Monda
Brenda Beesmer wrote me a letter,
an honest-to-goodness letter,
about the good old days when
she and I read comic books.
I wonder if kids do that today?
What does a comic book cost
today? Perhaps print is old
fashioned as youngsters can
download a super-hero app for
their phones. Well, I must admit,
as a young girl, I spent a lot
of my seventy-five cent allowance
on ten-cent comics. I even remember
buying five-cent comic books
that were sold without the cover.
I read every Archie comic, and
I wish I hadn't tossed Archie,
Jughead, Veronica and Betty
into the trash. I could reap
a fortune as an E-bay seller.
