Friedel Enters Town Board Race Feeling It’s
Better To Campaign Now Than To Wait
9/27/2007
By Paul Smart
Lifelong Olive resident Peter Friedel wants to serve the town
he’s loved his whole life. Two years ago he tried doing
this by running for an open position as town justice, losing
out by a couple dozen votes to Tim Cox. This year, he’s
the sole candidate, and Republican, challenging a slate of five
incumbent Democrats.
“I want to be involved in politics because I’ve
always been a proponent of the idea that if you’re not
involved, you shouldn’t complain about anything,”
he said this week of his decision to run, made earlier this
month when both parties held their caucuses.

Jail
Probe To Grand Jury
Todd Among Four Key Names Being Eyed For Possible Prosecution
9/27/2007
By Olive Press Staff
Though no single action or smoking gun was found by the
special investigative committee formed by the Ulster County
Legislature looking into why the county jail projected ended
up so far over-budget and past its deadlines, enough evidence
of questionable decision-making arose to move the matter
over to the county District Attorney’s office, which
has been in the midst of a simultaneous Grand Jury investigation
has been in the works since August 24.
Among the key names pegged for further investigation to
date have been former county attorney Frank Murray, former
Buildings & Grounds Commissioner Harvey Sleight, and
former county legislative chairmen Richard Gerentine and
Ward Todd.

With Growing Pressures, And

Questions

Kingston to the Delaware County
border along the old Ulster
and Delaware rail tracks that
have been leased and maintained
by the volunteers of the Catskill
Mountain Railroad (CMRR) since
the early 1980s, and legally
through 2016, are getting nerve-wracking,
to say the least. Even with
all parties expressing a generalized
sense of consensus and amiability
on the surface.

A Healthy Solution
9/27/2007
By Carol La Monda
It’s wrong. It’s so
wrong! It is so wrong that all
Americans do not have the opportunity
to afford good health care. How
can drug companies make huge profits
on the backs of American citizens?
Why can you get AIDS medicine
cheaper in Africa than you can
in the Bronx? Why do our prisoners,
our terrorist detainees, and our
neighbors to the north provide
health care while average Americans
lament and debate the cost of
medical insurance? It will be
the topic of primary and presidential
debates for the next year; however,
a year with discussion and no
solution may be too long for some.
