Even though legendary developer Dean Gitter was nowhere in sight Monday for the photo op of the groundbreaking of the new Emerson Inn, his son Alex was, after apparently being handed the reins of the project by his father, along with town supervisor Bob Cross Jr., county Chamber director Ward Todd, soon-to-be-replaced Ulster County Development Corps director Chester Straub, and a host of Emerson employees. Plans for the rebuilding, which the Gitters are saying they want done by next July, will see construction of 24 new four-star suites, the renovation of the old Spotted Dog into a classy restaurant, and the creation of a new, expanded spa. Unlike the Emerson of old, located across Route 28, and the r4egion’s top hotel until it burned tragically last April, everything in the new complex will be joined together in mall fashion. To ensure that ground could actually be broken this past week, pre-event work was done with an excavator on site. Let’s wish everyone luck at meeting their fast deadline!

Elves Among Us

By Carol La Monda
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, but he lives north and west of here. However, a few of his elves, I’ m sure, live in the Town of Olive. Yes, there are elves among us doing the good work of sharing. Joe and Sandy Friedel are selling fresh-cut or potted trees and donating proceeds to the Boy Scouts. Mary and Joey Tumasian and the next generation of Angie and Ross Singer hosted the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in Shokan. Santa arrived on a fire engine and met elf Linda Burkhardt to give out candy canes to the children and the children at heart. The following week, an unnamed political party hosted a breakfast with Santa at the Boiceville Inn complete with presents, pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, OJ and coffee. Since the real Santa was packing his sleigh, Henry Rank donned the costume and posed with toddlers as they shared their Christmas wish list. Last week Donna and Ralph VanKleeck hosted the Fireman’s potluck dinner and Santa visit. Santa arrived on the Shokan fire truck to ask the little ones what they want for Christmas.
