This month
the Olive town board granted a special permit to Verizon to
install the equipment that will provide cellular communication
service for much of the town including the Route 28 corridor.
The equipment will be placed on what is known as the South Mountain
tower. The tower was built and is owned by Masterpage Communications
Inc., and Verizon is renting space on the tower to place a cellular
antenna at a height of 122 feet and a six foot wide microwave
dish at a height of 30 feet.

Political
Season?
6/21/2007By
Olive Press Staff
With three seats up for grabs on the Olive Town Board this year
and one Town Justice seeking re-election to the bench, one may
think that the political wheels are turning in the respective
political camps.
If they are, they are turning slowly and very quietly.
This year longtime Supervisor Bert Leifeld, a Democrat, is once
again seeking re-election in a town where he at times runs unopposed.
Also up for re-election are Council members Linda Burkhardt
and Henry Rank, also Democrats.

Big Plans For
Ashokan Music
Camp?

By Gary Alexander
There were many
who first heard
the Native American
word "Ashokan,"
(thought to
mean "area
of abundant
fish,")
when they arrived
seeking work
in the Catskill
tanneries of
the 19th Century.
Some of the
tanners have
left their names
on the local
landscape, as
well, like General
Henry Samson,
who, when the
Civil War increased
demand for leather
goods, founded
a tannery in
what is now
Samsonville.
His partner
in that venture,
Zadock Pratt,
had already
depleted the
hemlock bark
in the region
surrounding
Prattsville,
a town that
may not be familiar
to residents
of Naples, Italy.It
took a musician
to make the
place word "Ashokan"
famous around
the world in
the 20th Century.

By the time you read this
column, the middle school
children will be done with
classes and the elementary
children will be able to count
the days on both hands. It
never really seems like summer
until school lets out. Remember
that feeling that an endless
summer awaited you? Now that
same time frame goes by in
the blink of an eye. Spring
abruptly ended and the heat
wave urged us to get out those
summer clothes and lawn furniture.

Come Out In West Hurley To Protest
Onteora Closure Talk
6/21/2007By
Lisa Childers
Dozens of parents of children
who attend the Phoenicia elementary
school gathered at the Tuesday
night, June 19 Onteora school
board meeting, protesting what
they believe will be the closure
of their school if the school
board’s proposed five-through-eight
middle school moves forward.
The meeting was held at West
Hurley Elementary School, closed
in 2004 because of declining
enrollment.
“The elephant in the room
is if we go five-through-eight,
Phoenicia will close, due to
fiscal responsibility —
we all know that and you all
know that,” said Robert
Warren, known for his stage
persona as Uncle Rock.
