Locally, The Answers Seem To Point Towards Restructurings &
A Look Back

Tsunami has become a popular word among headline writers recently.
The "foreclosure tsunami" is chased by other swelling
waves in most economic sectors, Bloomberg News warns of an inflation-induced
"financial tsunami," a U.N. delegate speaks of a "food
crisis tsunami" and the L.A. Times banners "a ‘perfect
storm’ of hunger" as worrisome tabulations cast threatening
shadows into the future. Even the usually jovial tones of the
slickest marketplace shills betray a quiver as the term "bleak
outlook" registers as gross understatement.

Rising Energy Costs Drives Increase In Local Production Of Both
Food And Fuel
7/17/2008

When the former Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Cuba’s
oil supply was shut off leaving its agricultural sector at a
dead standstill. Organic biological growers and educators were
elevated to the status and pay of doctors and engineers and
were given control of the state farms and associated resources.
Three years and an average per capita weight loss of 25 pounds
later, Cuba succeeded in converting to biological organic food
production and they are now an often visited model for the rest
of the world. Continue>>>

Schumer Steps Up To Aid Growing Efforts To Harness The Catskills’
Hydro Power
7/17/2008
Paul Smart
Support
from U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is drawing attention to
a new Catskills regional initiative to start harnessing
at least some of the hydro-electrical energy of the New
York City’s reservoir system as a new economic boon
for watershed residents in the coming years. In a July
7 letter to NYC Department of Environmental Protection
Commissioner Emily Lloyd that accompanied a widely-disseminated
press release, Schumer highlighted the Delhi-based Delaware
County Rural Electrical Cooperative, a grass roots energy
company started by farmers in the 1940s that is currently
pushing renewable resources in the avant garde of its
field, and its request to build generators for non-aqueduct
overflow waters flowing each year out of the Cannonsville,
Neversink, Pepacton and Schoharie Reservoirs.

Debris Draws DEC Ire
717/2008
By Olive Press Staff
Last week the State Department
of Environmental Conservation
issued tickets to two local
men involved in what DEC
alleges was the unlawful
disposal of remains of the
Phoenicia Hotel, which burned
one year ago on Main Street
in Phoenicia and was knocked
down two weeks ago.
The charges, all misdemeanors
and violations, were leveled
at Harry Jameson, the owner
of Romer Mountain Park in
Woodland Valley, and David
Gutierrez, owner of Woodstock
Landscaping.

Cell Service IS Coming To Town
Soon - Now Prompts County Call
To Boycott Greene
7/17/2008By
Carol LaMonda
Sooner or later, every conversation
includes this question: “So,
when is that cell tower going
to be ready?” My husband,
who has one of those mobile track
phones, insists he has four bars
here in Shokan. He neglects to
mention that he has to be standing
on one foot, facing Mohonk, and
hanging over the deck railing.
“Yep, four bars!”
Since I have Verizon, the only
four bars I can conjure up are:
The Boiceville Inn, Winchell’s,
Snyders, and the Country Inn.
