Of
True Historic Interest...
Olive’s Old School Baptist Church Holds A Deep History
Of Demanding Doctrines
8/31/2006By
Mescal Hornbeck
A building of historic interest in the Town of Olive is the
Old School Baptist Church which is located on route 28 at
Winchell’s Corner in Shokan. In February 1999 there
was a meeting there to celebrate its acceptance in the register
of Historic Buildings in NY State, one of twenty buildings
in NY State selected that year. It was founded in 1823 and
was known as the Olive -Hurley Old School Baptist. Church.
In browsing the internet one learns that he sect, was also
known as the Primitive Baptist Church as well as the Hard
Shell Baptist church. The sect was prevalent in this part
of the state in the late seventeen and early eighteen hundreds.
There were churches in Warwick and Roxbury New York and in
many other places..

Board Splits Along Town Lines As
Large Parcel Issue Roils District
One More TIme
8/31/2006
By Lisa Childers
In what could be viewed as a protest
vote, the Onteora School board passed
a resolution August 22 not to vote
on the Large Parcel Bill. The vote,
by a 4-3 margin, fell along town lines
with Trustees Herb Rosenfeld of Woodstock,
Maxanne Resnick of Shandaken and Marino
D’Orazio of Marbletown voting
against the resolution and Dave Patterson
of Hurley and Rita Vanacore, Cindy
O’Connor and Mary Jane Berholz
of Olive for it.
The vote will carry the same results
as voting no on the controversial
law.
A
Jar Of Olives...

The End Of A Summer
8/31/2006By
Carol La Monda
The Olive Free Library is hosting an exhibition
of art done by town of Olive residents. It
was both delightful and inspiring. Four of
my former students, Elijah Burgher, Eli Guillon,
Ryan Wenger, and Arianna Eisenson, had entries.
Friends and neighbors like Jeanne Bachor,
Alex Plitkins, Claire Kassor and Charlotte
Egbertson joined our celebrated artists Kate
McGloughlin and Barry De Baun. The artwork
was enjoyed on two levels: the aesthetic and
the familiar. It was a joy to discover that
someone you know created this object and shared
this talent with the community. I loved the
oil entitled “Dr. Kwit’s Shed”
by Catherine Hand, and I look forward to meeting
the artists I did not know personally. The
exhibit will extend through September 30.
