It’s all about ‘neighborhood’ in the vision
of those interested in keeping the American General Store functioning,
in some capacity, in West Shokan. A group of those interested
people will be meeting with Phil and Barbara Mansfield, who
have been operating a business at the location next to the post
office on Route 28A, on September 26th to discuss options for
the future of the establishment.

On the surface, it seemed to be all but over. The seven-year
wait was basically done with.
But then as the reality started sinking in, many started
replanting their feet to the ground, once again saying,
“Not here.”
So now they’re all calling it the end of the beginning.
In a hastily-pulled together press conference fronted by
an easy-going Governor Eliot Spitzer and a who’s who
of Catskills officials and regional environmental forces
at the Kingston Holiday Inn on Wednesday morning, September
5, developer Dean Gitter and his Crossroads Ventures LLC
was given the go-ahead for his long-proposed Belleayre Resort
at Catskill Park.
Or at least half of it.

Olive is just the name of a town,
a dot on the map in a green blotch
marked Catskill Park. I remember
when a family came into the Pineview
Bakery and asked directions to
the Catskill Park. They inquired
about the admission fee and what
attractions they could find within
its gates. The locals howled as
they tried to explain that the
Catskill Park was just a geo-political
designation on a quad sheet.
