Despite Public Outcry Over Its Deep Cuts, Board Promises To Try Cutting Even More

The Onteora Central School District Administration’s proposed 2006-07 budget presented at its March 28 meeting calls for total spending of $44,899,221, an increase of 4.39 percent or an additional $1,887,438. The proposal, which must be ratified by the trustees on the Board of Education by April 19 and then approved by voters in May, would represent a .57 percent difference above an austerity budget should the voters reject the proposal.

Developer Dean Gitter is saying he’s ready to negotiate to “significantly downsize” his proposed Belleayre Resort project.
At the same time, he’s asked for and received a significant tax abatement from the Ulster County Industrial Development Agency on his $7 million Emerson Inn rebuilding project on Route 28 near Mt. Tremper, despite having turned down such offers only four months ago.

By Gary Alexander A couple of temporary residents in Olive made an amazing discovery the other day. They weren’t up from the City for a few days to take in some country sights. Instead, they came all the way from Ohio to discover that you can’t run through a sliding glass door.
“I guess they had never seen a glass door before,” said Betty Rougeux of Boiceville, speaking of the three six-month-old Labrador Retriever pups she’s hosting until they find a permanent home. “They’ve never seen anything other than a field and some old junk cars.”

Nothing Gold Can Stay...

I know the calendar said that March 20th was the Vernal Equinox, but spring does not arrive in one day, at least not in the Catskills. The first sign of spring was Snow Drops that brave frozen soil and cold nights and announce that crocus (croci?) and daffodils are coming next. Then the Forsythia boldly screams, “Look at me!” Spring is when we decide the leave the winter coat at home and opt for a sweater even if we are not warm enough.
