New Comprehensive
Plan Proposal Draws Heated Opposition At Belleayre Hearing...
By
Rachel X. Weissman
A sometimes
unruly and hostile crowd of about 400 packed Belleayre's Lower
Lodge Monday night for the rescheduled public hearing on Shandaken's
comprehensive plan. The original January 13 meeting was cancelled
when so many (about 250) showed up at town hall that dozens
could not even gain entry to the room. No one was denied access
at this week's meeting, but about 75 stood at the edges of the
great hall during the four hour meeting at which about 34 people
spoke.
Of those
who spoke, 19 were opposed to the plan and thought it should
be scrapped; 13 were in favor of its direction; and two were
somewhere in between.

Onteora parent Coleen
Scanlan reported that her health care provider has pulled her
daughter from school due to a renewed outbreak of the teen's
skin rashes upon return to school, apparently related to a reaction
to some substance in the school environment.
Pine Hill Leaks
There appears to be a catastrophic break somewhere in the Pine
Hill water supply that is draining the reservoir, and if the
leak is not repaired soon the system may be shut off for an
indefinite period.
At press time water company officials were still trying to
find what they believe to be a major break in some line in the
century old system. Sources say that at present more water was
flowing out of the system than is flowing in so all hands are
on deck and trying to discover the problem before shut offs
occur.
Breaks in the pipes are common in the antiquated system, and
can be exacerbated by an increase in usage during extremely
cold weather, as people let the water run to keep their pipes
from freezing. The water system, now privately owned by developer
Dean Gitter, is expected to be taken over by the town in the
next couple of moths.

LIBBY
PATAKI was on hand at last weekend's annual Belleayre Snowball
to receive a special Spirit of the Catskills award. She noted
that her husband, Gov. George, couldn't make it, "because
I told him to stay in Albany and work on the budget, and make
sure he put some more bucks in there for Belleayre!"
