Hot Crowd, Cold Night

New Comprehensive Plan Proposal Draws Heated Opposition At Belleayre Hearing...

By Rachel X. Weissman

A sometimes unruly and hostile crowd of about 400 packed Belleayre's Lower Lodge Monday night for the rescheduled public hearing on Shandaken's comprehensive plan. The original January 13 meeting was cancelled when so many (about 250) showed up at town hall that dozens could not even gain entry to the room. Pine Hill Leaks

There appears to be a catastrophic break somewhere in the Pine Hill water supply that is draining the reservoir, and if the leak is not repaired soon the system may be shut off for an indefinite period.

At press time water company officials were still trying to find what they believe to be a major break in some line in the century old system. Sources say that at present more water was flowing out of the system than is flowing in so all hands are on deck and trying to discover the problem before shut offs occur.

Breaks in the pipes are common in the antiquated system, and can be exacerbated by an increase in usage during extremely cold weather, as people let the water run to keep their pipes from freezing. The water system, now privately owned by developer Dean Gitter, is expected to be taken over by the town in the next couple of moths.

George, couldn't make it, "because I told him to stay in Albany and work on the budget, and make sure he put some more bucks in there for Belleayre!"
