If the ongoing slash and burn budget cuts of the Governor and state legislature werenít enough these past years, a new policy report is suggesting more Draconian measures including everything from across-the-board wage freezes to the elimination of states arts and domestic violence abatement fundingÖ and the sale of all private ski areas, including Belleayre Mountain.

Stanley Takes Reins, Putting Off Planning Board Decision, Shifting Insurance Plan

January 4 was the first official night for incoming Shandaken Supervisor Robert Stanley, the Republican Councilman who defeated former Supervisor Peter DiSclafani at the polls last November. And while the new administration is already shaking things up a bit with a plan to cut back on one town employee’s salary and possibly making changes to the town planning board, it was Stanley’s announcement about the town’s Highway Department possibly taking over some of the snowplowing chores for Ulster County that seemed to be the biggest change for 2010.

Everyone wondered how we remembered all that “Marian C.” had done in her life. Well, when Dad had gotten sick last year, we asked Mom to prepare his, as well as her obituary because we could never remember all that they both had done and we suppose she even forgot some things.

Proposed Belleayre Resort developer Dean Gitter took to the radio December 30, announcing in an interview on WAMC-FM that by the end of January he “expects to file a new environmental impact survey” with regulators overseeing the project’s permitting process at the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Mandated Benefits Are Forcing Program Cuts As State Aid Dries Up For Education

The Onteora district board of education weighed in on information projecting what the 2010/2011-school budget could look like at its first meeting of the new year. Health care and retirement appear to be the driving force behind next year’s budget increase, alongside loss of revenue and state aid.

Brutally cold temperatures, deep snow and thick ice... Time for the 13th annual Primitive Biathlon on January 17th in the Oliverea Valley. The competition will again be held on the Upper Esopus Fish and Game Association’s grounds when contestants race with guns on skis, all in traditional gear. Things kick off around noon, after morning registration. Check it out!
