For the first time in years Shandaken Voters will go to the
polls with no knowledge of how much of a tax increase is proposed
by the current administration for the following year.
Traditionally tax hikes are well known weeks prior to Election
Day and voters act based in large part on that information.
But for reasons difficult to understand, the tax information
may not become public until a public hearing on the town budget
set for November 8th, two days after voters make their decisions.

On Sunday night, October 21, Phoenicia resident Adele Pearlman
suffered a brief but petrifying bear attack in her yard.
She was knocked to the ground by the creature while trying
to save her dog from the bruin.

There’s something about filling a room with
candidates for political office to suck the politics
out of governmental candidates.
At the Sunday afternoon Meet The Candidates forum
that filled Shandaken Town Hall for almost three hours
October 21, the first such event to draw all local
candidates without a boycott by town Republicans in
several years, a full 17 candidates for various local
offices politely took turns sharing views with an
audience of about 50 people, who submitted a flurry
of questions to event moderators.

Named New Principal At High School

The Onteora School Board has named a new principal
for the High School to replace Barbara Ruben, who
left last month for a new job at Ulster BOCES. At
its board meeting Tuesday night, October 25, the board
approved and welcomed the High School’s new
Assistant Principal Lance Edelman, hired last summer,
for the institution’s top spot.

what location in Ulster County do a railroad, a bike
and hiking trail, traffic from the state Thruway and
a bus station come together along a major roadway?
And where can you catch a dining car to appreciate
the vistas around the Ashokan Reservoir? Eventually,
the answer may be at an inter-modal transportation
hub on Washington Avenue in uptown Kingston, It is
a potentially lucrative vision for uniting rail and
trail to create viable tourist attractions for Ulster
County and Kingston.
