A
whole busload of Shandakenites made their way to the
October 3 opening parade for the new Walkway Over The Hudson between
Poughkeepsie and Highland, stopping to pick up Olive brethren
en route and having a spectacular time in coonskin caps and their
bright banners. All thanks to Jen Dragon!
Drilling
OKed For Catskills
Questions Arise About DEC’s Actions Despite Geologist’s
Belief It Will Miss Us
10/8/2009
By Paul Smart
The state
Department of Environmental Conservation has finally released
its first draft of an environmental impact statement that
proposes new laws for natural gas drilling in New York’s
Marcellus Shale after 18 months of study and several delays.
State officials say the guidelines, which are 809 pages long
and extremely detailed, address key concerns including the
disclosure of fluids used in the drilling process known as
hydraulic fracturing as well as the on-site handling of drilling
waste.
The
draft materials now face a 60-day public review period. There
will no public hearings where the public can make statements
for the record.

Onteora Union Says Talks Not Working While Board Says They’re
Still New
10/8/2009
By Lisa Childers
The Onteora
teachers and non-teachers contract dispute continues. Hundreds
of picketers, including retired teachers and teachers from
schools throughout the area, joined the ranks and marched
with Onteora teachers in front of the Middle/High School
before Tuesday night’s October 6 school board meeting
at the Boiceville campus. The marchers then silently entered
the High School cafeteria in order to address the school
board. The venue was changed from Bennett Elementary to
the High School in order to accommodate the mass of people.
But the board never showed up at the 6pm start time.

Is
2 Percent Too Much?
2010 Preliminary Budget Still Draws Flak
Even As Board Votes To Cut Its Own Pay
10/8/2009
By Phoenicia Times Staff
The
Shandaken Supervisor/Budget Officer has proposed
a spending plan for 2010 that would raise taxes
about two percent over this year’s rate,
but opponents of the administration say that
during these tough times the plan still doesn’t
cut it.
While the presentation of the budget on Monday,
October 5 was scheduled to run between 6 and
7 pm, before the regular town board meeting,
interest in the subject spilled well over into
the regular session, complete with an official
vote to lower the wages given the town board.
Triple Crowner
Wilderness Bob Expiates Our Pasts
10/8/2009
By Paul Smart
Wilderness Bob doesn’t want to use anything
but his trail name for the story he feels he has
to tell, all about walking our nation’s
three longest scenic hiking trails to earn more
than what such walkers call the Triple Crown.
“You have a lot of time hiking for five
months to go over just what you want in a story
like this,” Bob says sipping coffee at Olives
in Shokan Square a few days after his return from
out west. “The reason I’m sitting
here with you is to bring attention to the trails
that are out there, as well as the trails we have
right here in the Catskills that many don’t
even know about.”
The man’s lean, clear-eyed, well-spoken.
He started hiking the Continental Divide Trail,
down in the Boot Heel of New Mexico, last April
25. He finished his long walk in Canada’s
Watertown Peace Park on September 24, 2700 miles
later
