PIANO AFICIANADOES ALERT... At 2:30pm on Sunday, April 16 at the Olive Free Library in West Shokan Trail Mix Concerts will be presenting the incomparable pianist Nelson Padgett performing a number of works by the masterful Frederic
Chopin, a Paganini, a piece by Franz Liszt, some works by Sergei Prokofiev and Sergei Rachmaninoff, a newer piece by Philip Glass, and the great Variations on a Theme by Paganini Op.35 Book 1, Johannes Brahms. At 12pm (prior to the concert) master piano restorer Israel Schossev will present Introduction to Tuning, a demonstration of some of the basic concepts in tuning. The talk will give an overview of pitch, sound, intervals, timbre, tools, and basic techniques. No prior tuning or knowledge of music theory is necessary. The lecture will take place at Rackelle and Israel's home at 13 Burgher Rd. West Shokan, NY 12494. Reservations are required. call 657 6864 or e-mail woodstockpianos@aol.com. Pianist Nelson Padgett, whose poetic sensibility and brilliant technique have dazzled audiences around the world, has performed throughout the United States and in the major cities of Europe, South America and Asia as a soloist and collaborative pianist, in repertoire ranging from standard concerti to world premieres of major works by Philip Glass.
Born in North Carolina, he began piano studies at age six and gave his first solo recital at age nine. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts. His teachers have included Ruth Walters, Clifton Matthews, Anne Epperson, Ellen Mack, Leon Fleisher, Lee Luvisi, Gyorgy Sebok, and Menahem Pressler. His awards as a soloist include a silver medal from the William Kapell International Competition and a Beethoven Fellowship from the American Pianists Association. He has collaborated with Pamela Frank, Elmar Oliveira, Pinchas Zuckerman, Branford Marsalis, and is an official pianist of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, where he won the prize for best performance of a Beethoven Sonata with gold medalist Barnabas Kelemen.
He has performed world-wide with the Philip Glass Ensemble, Steve Reich & Musicians, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestra of St. Lukes. Every summer since 2000 he has been an official pianist at the Meadowmount School. Recent projects include the soundtrack for "Bee Season" starring Richard Gere. Mr. Padgett has lived in New York City since 1987, where he can be heard every Saturday evening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, performing solo and chamber music as part of Orion Music's Balcony Series.
