was Junior Olympics time on Saturday, June 13, and Bennett Elementary
ended up winning the districtwide title, besting Phoenicia and
Woodstock in a host of track and field events. Now it’s
on to graduation events in all schools, with High School Seniors
due for theirs on Friday, June 26. See page 17 inside!

Dozens of students and parents packed the Bennett
Elementary cafeteria at Tuesday night’s Onteora
board of Education meeting, protesting a possible
elimination of the elementary strings program.
Over the span of two hours, parents and students spoke
at length on the program and how it opened up opportunities
to children.

Buying some time by exploring lower cost technologies
may have paid off, as the latest news from New York City
on a possible wastewater treatment system for Phoenicia
is all good. At a brief special meeting of the town board
on Monday, June 15, Supervisor Peter DiSclafani briefed
the board on recent communications from the City’s
Department of Environmental Protection, which is still
holding in reserve about $17 million for construction
of a wastewater treatment system for the hamlet.
