No $$ For Collaboration
Route 28 Towns Refuse To Pony Up To Push Joint Scenic Byway Application
7/29/2010
By Phoenicia Times Staff
Last Thursday, July 22, the Central Catskills Collaborative was
brought together by advisor Peter Manning, Regional Planner for
the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, to talk
over the future of the entity.
Formed two years ago, just prior to the economic crash, the Central
Catskills Collaborative has been working toward getting a 50 mile
section of Route 28 between the town of Olive and the town of
Andes designated as a Scenic Byway, under the idea that such a
designation would open the door for funding opportunities for
the region that would otherwise not be available.

7/19/2010
By Violet Snow

in the bark and upper canopy leaf loss, signs
of the emerald ash borer, a destructive insect
that Ulster County has been fending off by outlawing
transport of untreated firewood since 2008. That
regulation still holds, more so than ever since
two of the insects (also known as EAB) were found
in sampling traps in Saugerties on July 15.

They're Set To Premiere A New Locally-Penned Singing
Play, 'Closer Than Ever
7/19/2010
By Violet Snow
The Shandaken Theatrical Society (STS) has come
a long way since a small group of town residents
created a skit based on the song "Happiness
is Shandaken" for the 1976 bicentennial celebration.
That effort was so satisfying that the participants
decided to form a theater company. Thirty-four
years later, STS has been through a lot of changes,
including the 1998 purchase of the Odd Fellows
Hall on Church Street as its permanent home.

City DEP Lays Out A Timeline With An
Underlying Threat: Play It Or Lose Offer
7/15/2010
The following letter was sent to the Town of
Shandaken from the New York City Department
of Environmental Protection on July 9, and spells
out clearly the current timeline regarding funding
for a Phoenicia Sewer District... or not. After
an initial three month play-it-or-lose scenario,
wherein the town has to agree to the CWC's basic
contract for taking on administration of such
systems' planning, construction, and operation,
actual countdown to the first flush could take
as long as five years...
