DON’T
EVER TRY THIS AT HOME... Because it’s a once in a lifetime
shot. Here, a friend of the paper caught a young bear checking
out some sun-tea by the grill in Mt. Tremper. It’s the season
to be careful about such things...

By Violet Snow
The Empire State Railway Museum marks its 25th anniversary
this year, even as the board of directors makes ambitious
plans for the future. The museum is housed in the charming
Phoenicia Station, built in 1899 and featuring elegant scrollwork
in the eaves outdoors and lustrous grooved paneling on the
interior walls and vaulted ceiling.

Catastrophe!
Foreclosure Wave Hits Our Homes
7/3/2008
By Gary Alexander
Many, perhaps most, Ulster County residents would agree
that last winter was a long, tough stretch with a hoped-for
thaw staying ahead of the calender as home-heating costs
swelled daily. But, for new families, just starting out,
and for elderly retirees on fixed incomes, it got longer
and tougher by the week, leaving them with deep concerns
about next winter.

Fresh From Her First Book’s Success, Our Author Finds
Her Local Weakness
7/3/2008
By Martha Frankel
This is what's been going on lately--- everywhere I go someone
wants to tell me their secret. I don't mean little confidences
that they might tell their hair stylist or their trainer
or even their best friend--- you know, that lipstick they
swiped from a local store, or the co-worker they kissed

in response to new state legislation he says is aimed at
stalling growth at Shandaken-based Belleayre Mountain, a
state-owned ski resort..

Statement
concerning Dean Gitter’s recent legal
filing:
Mr. Gitter is suing the The Phoenicia Times
and suing us personally over a sentence
written by one of our readers that appeared
in a letter to the editor. In that letter,
the writer expressed a personal opinion
that Mr.Gitter had dealt improperly with
public officials, and defined the terms
used to mean that he had hired professional
lobbyists to try and sway their views. He
did, it’s a common practice, and it’s
perfectly lawful. Because our newspaper
published this person’s personal characterization
of that practice, Mr. Gitter is seeking
monetary damages from us for allegedly libeling
him, defaming his character, and intentionally
causing him mental anguish. In our view,
there is no lawful basis for Mr. Gitter’s
claims.
