What’s happening with the giant Belleayre expansion,
including Crossroads Ventures’ long-pending development
plans, put forth by then-Governor Eliot Spitzer a year ago?
On the one hand, the development team that at one time hoped
to be done with the review of its project by the end of this
summer just announced that due to the magnitude of the state
requirements of the review, they are not even close to that
goal.

Mt. Tremper Arts Did Its First Season

At the Mount Tremper Arts Festival opening party, the
Brooklyn klezmer band Golem performed. Golem play as if
their clothes are on fire. Klezmer, they remind us, is
a youthful and drunken music — not a sepia photograph.
The key to pop music is the drummer, so I paid special
attention to the Golem drummer (Tim Monaghan), who played
very simply, speedily, and kept the band on the edge of
exhaustion, always.
After the show (but before the encore), the violinist,
Alicia Jo Rabins, told me that Golem has been together
five years. Of course!, I realized. Spontaneity like theirs
does not appear overnight!

The Shandaken Town Board met in a special
session Monday, August 25, to begin work
on the 2009 budget. And from the sound of
it everything is on the table when it comes
to possible spending cuts.
The informal session, which was sparsely
attended, saw the board members seated at
a table scrutinizing the current figures
in the budget in an attempt to find places
to save.
