Following
recent stories about the pending removal of payphones
along the stretch of Route 28 where cell service just isn’t,
County Exec Mike Hein made a few calls and got at least the one
by Chuck Perez’ Big Indian Service Station left in place.
With Hein now asking Verizon to put cell service in for town,
Perez and others are singing his praises. Talk about the power
one can have working through the channels...

By Paul Smart
Dean Gitter’s
Belleayre Resort project has crept back into the news this
month with threats that a 2007 Agreement in Principal brokered
by former governor Eliot Spitzer may come apart, and warnings
from the state that any progress on the long-pending development
will be at least two years off, due to the bad economy.

Shandakenites Prepare To March Proudly In The Upcoming
Walkway Festivities
9/24/2009
By Phoenicia Times Staff
Jen Dragon has been on a mission these past few months.
The Chichester artist has been busy drumming up local support
for the upcoming Walkway Over the Hudson unveiling set for
October 3rd 200 feet above the river between Poughkeepsie
and Highland.
Her facebook page lights up regularly with notes about how
things are going and what volunteers can do to help. She
spent Shandaken day in a booth rallying support for the
procession that is to be the highlight of the day, and most
recently appeared before the Shandaken town board to enlighten
our elected officials about the October event and what the
town can do to participate.

To The Agenda
9/24/2009
By Lisa Childers
The Onteora
Teachers Association (OTA) and Onteora Non-Teaching Employee
Association (ONTEA) silently marched in front of the Middle/High
school campus before Tuesday night’s September 22
school board meeting.
This is the second time in two weeks teachers and staff
walked a picket line, carrying signs for approximately one-half
hour. They stretched from one end of the sidewalk to the
other facing Route 28.
When the marching came to an end, Middle School teacher
Mike Kocher addressed the crowd of teaching staff.

But County & State Say That’s All Folks
When It Comes to Route 28 Repaving
9/24/2009
By Brian Powers
Route 28 is flat and smooth again east of Phoenicia,
but for now that’s as far as the beautiful
new road surface is likely to go.
Town taxes next year will likely rise about two
percent, and a public hearing on the 2010 budget
was set for Monday, October 5.
Kids in Phoenicia will be getting a zippy new play
structure to climb in the Parish Field, half funded
by private efforts and half by the town.

The
Cranes Sang For Killian
How The Whole Wide Community Came Out For A Hearty
Send-Off To A True Spirit
9/24/2009
By Martha Frankel
There were cranes. Everywhere you looked, there
were cranes. Thousands of them, strung together,
hanging all around the pavilion at the Davis Park.
Balls of cranes, guarding the doors at St. Augustine’s
Church in West Shokan. Cranes stuck in trees,
watching over the graveside at the Bushkill Cemetery.
Some were as small as a pinky-nail; others larger
than ducks.
