Memorial day is here. The unofficial start of summer starts now
in the region, and in Shandaken Belleayre Beach at Pine Hill Lake
opens this Saturday, May 26. As always, one can expect plenty
of fishing and tubing all season along on the Esopus creek, and
of course all the hiking trails are open, as well as the state’s
campsite in Woodland Valley.

Once again, Olive voters prevailed over the rest of the Onteora
School District, electing a pair of candidates who gained the
backing of the powerful Olive Matters voting bloc by meeting
with its members earlier this Spring.
School board president Marino D’Orazio, a ten-year board
member, was defeated in the May 15 Onteora district school board
election and now the majority of the school board —five
out of seven — are from the town of Olive.

Belleayre’s Lanza Comes Under Fire From IG
Office, Putting Job In Jeopardy

A two-year
investigation by the state Inspector General's Office
has concluded that Tony Lanza, the superintendent
of the state-owned Belleayre Mountain Ski Center,
engaged in conduct that constituted a conflict of
interest between his official duties and private activities.
Lanza, who says the investigation followed complaints
to the inspector general from disgruntled Belleayre
employees, criticized the office's report and said
there were factual inaccuracies in it. Lanza also
tried stressing that while the matter was referred
to the state Ethics Commission, that body reviewed
the report and took no action against him.

Under the new realignment plan of the Archdiocese
of New York, two mission churches of St. Francis de
Sales Church in Phoenicia were slated to close earlier
this year. According to Rev. Phil Tran, Parish Administrator,
“at our request, the Archdiocese has given us
permission to hold closing services at Our Lady of
La Salette mission church in Boiceville and Our Lady
of Lourdes mission church in Allaben.

Bringing Together Homegrown Produce

A small produce and health food market opening
at the Black Bear Hollow Café on Saturday,
May 26, will feature, in the coming weeks, vegetables
and fruits from local gardens as part of the Neighbors
Garden Market, a pilot project of Andrew Martin’s
and Calandra Cruickshank’s Good Deeds Foundation.
The recently renovated café on Route 28,
a couple miles west of Phoenicia, reopened for
business on May 11 and did a brisk trade as regular
patrons flocked back in, said Kurt Boyer, who
owns and runs the café with his wife, Cynnie.
