An attempt to oust three elected tax assessors and replace them
with one appointed by the town board was delayed Monday because
some Board members were not sure that the Chief Assessor was even
aware of the plan.

Split Board Decision Sets District On Road To
Closing Of Another School

After two years of discussions, debate and research, the Onteora
district school board voted to establish a five-through-eight
middle school at a board meeting in Phoenicia Tuesday night,
June 5. This decision, in turn, will force the closure of one
elementary school due to declining enrollment, although the
board was not specific on which school it will be.

Town Votes to Keep Phoenicia’s Septic
Treatment Future Open, With Caveats

Whether
funds will be available in the future for a wastewater
treatment facility in Phoenicia is still anyone’s
guess. Per an April 20 letter from Jeffrey Graf of
NYC’s DEP, Shandaken was facing a May 31 deadline
to reply affirmatively to the agency, in order to
keep the roughly $17 million still allocated for such
a project available for an additional 13 months, should
the town agree in future, to consider revisiting the
issue.

Coalition Files Lawsuit Against New FAD Over Issues
All See As Solvable

After months local saber rattling, the Coalition of
Watershed Towns has made good on its threat to mount
a legal challenge against the proposed Filtration
Avoidance Determination the EPA is offering the City
of New York.
“I imagine the paperwork has been filed,”
said Robert Cross Jr., the Shandaken Town supervisor
and a member of the Coalitions Executive Committee.
Cross said the Coalition has trouble with the City
being given a deal that lets the Big Apple avoid filtration
10 years instead of only five.

item,” said Susan Weeks, the physician’s
assistant and homeopath who has been running a
free holistic medicine clinic at Family of Woodstock
four times a year since 2003 and now brings a
similar offering to Phoenicia on Wednesday, June
20, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
