Legislature Fights To Slim Tax Figures In Light Of Continuing

Responding to a request from the Democratic minority and a subsequent
directive from Republican legislative chairman Richard Gerentine,
a parade of department heads came before the full legislature
in a special meeting Tuesday, November 30, to explain choices
they made in seeking to cut 3.5 percent from their particular
proposed budgets, contained in Ulster county’s overall tentative
budget for 2005 of $295 million. That figure would require a nearly
24 percent increase in the county property tax levy.
