Tanglewood
Marionettes will be performing "The Sleeping Beauty "on
Saturday, April 24h at 2: at the Skene Library in Fleischmanns
, and "Hansel and Gretel" at the Roxbury Arts Group
at 7 p.m. that same day. Both performances are presented by
The Roxbury Arts Group and sponsored through a generous grant
from Kids in the Kaatskills. Admission for both performances
will be $3. Free popcorn and punch will be served. "Hansel
and Gretel, " Tanglewood's newest production, is
based on the timeless classic by the Brothers Grimm, and features
melodies from the Humperdink opera. The Tanglewood Marionettes,
founded in 1993 by Peter Schaefer and Anne Ware, is a nationally
touring marionette theater based in New England. The company
represents many years of puppetry tradition and experience.
Peter Schaefer was born into a family of puppeteers, and has
been performing with hand puppets, rod puppets and marionettes
since he was a child. Anne Ware came to puppetry
after studying art and philosophy in college, but now that she
has been performing with marionettes for over fifteen years,
she says she can't imagine doing anything else.
The Tanglewood troupe performs with the marionettists in plain
sight so the audience can witness firsthand the mechanics of
puppet manipulation by artists who have perfected their art
over many years. The Roxbury Arts Center is on Vega Mountain
Road just off Rte 30 in Roxbury, and The Skene Memorial Library
is on Main St. in Fleischmanns. Call (607) 326-7908 for information.
