A Difficult Adoption
Cross Committee’s Comp Plan Approved
Amidst Charges Of Procedural Problems

At a tensely divided meeting punctuated by Supervisor Bob Cross Jr’s threats to have at least four people removed by police for attempting to ask questions, Shandaken’s town board adopted a comprehensive plan on Monday, July 11. In a series of votes straight down party line, Cross and fellow Republicans Jane Todd and Joe Munster voted in favor of immediately adopting the plan. Democrats Edna Hoyt and Paul Van Blarcum opposed doing so, saying they and the public were not afforded time to read and review recent changes to it, and had never seen a 21-page “ Environmental Assessment Form” presented for their approval that night.

GOP Picks Setchko & Stanley To Run On New ‘Prosperity’ Ticket With Cross Support

At first, everyone at last week’s Shandaken GOP caucus in Glenford Park was grumbling that some of the local papers had listed the start-time for the biennial event at 7 p.m. instead of 6:30. A few explanations were started about how the wrong date had been listed in an announcement letter… but then the whole thing became moot when technical difficulties meant nothing got started until after the “wrong” time anyway.

Them & Us... Again
A Writer Weighs In On Some Of The Detritus From Political Recent Battles

(The following was written for The Olive Press but seemed equally apt for many of the problems of rhetoric and division our own town iscurrently facing -Ed.)
I hear a lot in Olive these days about “them” and “us”. “They” come up here from New York City and buy properties for more than they’re worth, “they” expect too many services, “they” are driving up property taxes and making it impossible for “us” to live here. “They” are rude and pushy. “They” just don’t understand that we do things differently in the country.

Stepping Up To Be The OCS VP

The kitchen at new Onteora School Board Vice President Rita Vanacore’s Shokan house is a busy place, filled with the comings and goings of the three generations of her family that occupy the large 1906 home, built for one of the City supervisors for the building of the nearby Ashokan reservoir, as well as its numerous adjacent houses. And Vanacore’s ability to not only concentrate on what’s before her in such family activitoes, while simultaneously engaging each and every member of her family, from grandkids to kids to calls from her uncle, former OCS board-member Joe Vanacore, living with his wife now in Kingston.
